The reason he electrocuted stuff is because he made DC (direct?currents), and shortly later Tesla made AC(Alternating currents). Not wanting the competition, Edison rigged some experiments using AC to publicly electrocute stuff, "proving it was bad". However, apparently no one cared and DC fell out of favor. Btw, the zoo was gonna kill the elephant for what not, so Edison asked if he could do it.
