Except in that episode where Mr. Crabs was trying to avoid paying some tax, we learned Spongebob makes less than a nickel in I think it was a year. I say Spongebob comes from an insanely rich family that pays his expenses so he can live on his own.

That works, I would recommended checking out funnydndstories.com They've been rebuilding the site since it broke from an attack. I gathered most of the stories in my file from the wayback machine's copy of their page. So far my favorite story is Stealing Immortality. It's worth the read.
