^ this. And also, let's not forget that everybody has a lot of different social categories that apply to them. There are plenty of vets who are nonwhite, gay, trans, female, low income, disabled, suffer from mental health issues etc. Especially the last two because combat. I feel like advocating for better care/accommodations for mental health and disabilities would benefit vets a lot and is the least we can do since they got hurt protecting us.

(Link to news story here: http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/crime/227287943-story) It looks like the lawyers haven't announced the specifics of the charge yet, but my guess would be that they'd pursue hate crime charges for both race and disability, since the language of hate crime laws includes both.

Well, they've been charged with hate crimes and the case for that looks pretty solid (and even without the hate crimes charge the kidnapping etc. is pretty undeniable), so justice will be served.

Some examples of persistent inequality are the terrible public schools that serve mostly black/minority students as opposed to neighboring districts that serve non minority students, the fact that young black/Latino men are jailed as much higher rates than white men for the same crimes, and inequalities in hiring that have been demonstrated in studies such as the one that showed that the same resume is more likely to get an interview if there's a white sounding name at the top than a black sounding one.
Second, talk about the discrepencies/hypocrisies in the way people portray slavery all you want. I agree that that's another part of history that tends to be oversimplified. That's my point, it's not about slavery. Slavery just marked the beginning of a timeline that has not reached equality yet.
Not sure what the bit about feminists being US-centric is doing in this conversation, but for racial justice groups I'd like to point to the third world liberation front as globalists

Word.^ yeah, @famouseone and @heywood, asking people to be ashamed of themselves for their ancestors' actions that they had absolutely no control over is pointless and unhelpful. But I think the bigger problem folks are pointing out about Columbus is that he's venerated as a hero in America today although he did rape, kill, subjugate, and enslave the people already living on the continent before he arrived. Also, the way he is often portrayed fits in with this whole "the Americas were useless and undiscovered until white people arrived" narrative, which is both historically false and really insulting. Basically, people are asking for more accurate representations of history rather than blind hero worship of a guy who did make a huge impact on the world as we know it but also did some pretty fucked up shit once he got where he was going. Historical Correctness. As in actual facts.
