I'm actually quite amazed at the lack of female characters in fantasy and sci-fi from that era. It's as if the authors create vast and complex realities, often with parallel universes and alternate time lines, bizarre technology, outlandish political systems and the most exotic aliens and fairy creatures beyond your comprehension as a matter of routine but somehow fail almost completely to include female characters. I don't think we, as people used to gender inclusion, can actually understand the mindset that caused this.
For reference I suggest studying any of Isaac Asimov's, H Beam Piper's or Philip K Dick's writings and then taking a look at Ursula Le Guin's. Actually, read Le Guin's first.
