I think its like on a stair-like platform, covered by a soft, dark cloth (like velvet, which is usually chosen because it is fuzzy enough to hide edges), with the 'a' card in the middle, and the b card (which is the same size as the 'a' card) is moved from the higher up stair (and therefore closer to the camera) to the one lowest stair (and further away from the camera) on the step lower than the 'a' card.
Now, the reason why this works is that the eye doesn't get to see depth from the camera angle, and the cloth is concealing the stairs.
