Those of us with invisible illnesses get treated the same way. I suffer from Fibromyalgia and have doctors in past years look me in the face and tell me this disorder doesn't exist and it's all in my head. In June of this year they found conclusive physical proof that Fibromyalgia is REAL and those of us afflicted with this disorder have a REAL medical condition. I wish I could shove that AMA report right in the faces of everyone who has ever told me to just suck it up or everyone has aches and pains or everyone feels a bit tired, etc. They can all kiss my Puerto Rican Ass.
Fibromyalgia is a type of phantom pain (since there isn't a physical cause) so in the most technical terms, it is all in your head (or your nerves more specifically). It can also be treated successfully with antidepressants such as amitryptilline.
My sister posted this on Facebook as she's had depression and eating disorders for most of her life and our mum responded by saying it's all in your head and a positive outlook can make a huge difference....
I appreciate the idea that positive thinking CAN make a difference but she didn't understand at all that her comment was the EXACT point of the post.
"You have a broken leg? Oh, have you tried just not have a broken leg?" Would never be used as medical advice so why is it acceptable to use "have you tried NOT being depressed" to a person with depression?
I love this post because in my experience it is definitely true (but obviously won't be for all)
Peace out guys!
Sure, the placebo effect can make small differences, but you can't cure things just by thinking about them. Cancer, No. Parkinsons, No. Broken Leg, No.
