Imo it really depends on if the thing made is a new ip or if its based on some pre-existing fandom. Like if it's brand new then hell yeah make your thing to suit you. If it's not I feel you need to respect the pre-existing characters, history and fans of that thing else you end up with garbage like the M Night Avatar or the dumpster fire that is Velma
