I fail to understand the disdain for proper punctuation, beyond perhaps those people who do not know how to punctuate properly and thusly feel self conscious when others do.
I know of no person who never, at least in informal correspondence, breaks any rules or conventions of the English language as a matter of convenience or otherwise. That said, it’s a period. It’s simple to add on many devices like Apple portable devices with digiérale keyboards have functions such as “double tap” on the space bar to add a period.
For my part, I try to follow proper punctuation, grammar, and spelling whenever possible. That said, I can't deny there are instances where I simply disregard them for the sake of convenience, or because I am unsure of what rules apply. This is especially true when it comes to punctuation.
