Ok that's fascinating, apparently they also didn't have any public buildings which is highly atypical, individual houses had ovens (also atypical) and they seemed to have venerated bulls as well as an unidentified goddess. I'm getting into a rabbithole here!
"There are some obvious differences between houses: some have double walls, some
have doorways between two buildings, some are rebuilt on the very same spot for many generations, and some are burned in large house fires", ngl I wasn't expecting the last part. Wtf happened here.
Yeah that last part is a head trip. It would also expand the my carbon monoxide theory, as the easiest way to get rid of it is to break it down, which takes combustion and enough oxygen. Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen and it likes to sink; it clings to floors; is undetectable, and WILL suffocate you if exposed long enough.
Most likely there was a natural disaster of some sort that decimated the population. Disease, famine, drought, any major upset could cause a severe impact in an urbanized environment. Being unable to get enough food or water would cause a population to shift into other places.
They put it all in the street, which is linked to entering their houses via their roof. (this culture was so weird it looks like I'm pulling your leg, but I'm not, if anyone's in the mood I've found an entire book on this place).

As a bonus fact, they used double walls a lot (aka a house and its neighbor were separated by a 15cm gap), they filled the gap with debris, and this could very well have been to accomodate the ground moving over time -smort!
