An action guaranteed to result in your own death isn’t self defense- self defense requires that you are either attempting to stop physical harm or loss of life to self... seeing that you are either a. Dead and then too dead to avenge your own death against yourself and/or b. The act of suicide would occur simultaneously- meaning that there cannot be a cause/effect relationship- you can’t kill yourself as a reaction to killing yourself. Therefore it would at best be a double homicide or murder suicide- both of which require two victims and well- suicide is a separate act and crime than murder so there isn’t even one murder victim- just a suicide victim. Therefore- suicide is just suicide.

Lol. Funny as it seems- in many places it is illegal- in America and the UK it was illegal until less than a lifetime ago- and in some jurisdictions it is still technically illegal. While you can’t arrest the dead- the crime of the act has or had some serious implications. Firstly- an attempted crime is itself almost always a lesser crime. So in places where suicide isn’t legal- those unsuccessful at or even those who change their minds last minute could face various criminal charges. Secondly- dying a criminal can have an impact on how your body, your estate are treated. Burial options and in some legal systems- even extra burdens for the family.

Because of these and other reasons- suicide (killing ones self) is more commonly legal or decriminalized even if it stigmatized. HOWEVER- many countries legal systems DO hold certain provisions on mental health- one major one being that a person found not of sound mind is not capable or legally able to make certain decisions- suicide being one of them- and in current view the very act of or intent of suicide is, in most cases, sufficient evidence to prove a person is not of sound mind.

It is also true that many legal systems place a responsibility on police and other public servants to safeguard life as part of their duties. So if they are aware of a person who is to commit impending suicide they are often compelled to stop them. Good Samaritan type laws also place legal penalties on those who see a person in mortal danger and have the ability to help without reasonable fear of self harm- and do not. And of course- many people from educators and caregivers onwards have legal and professional obligations to report suicidal behaviors or indicators and perform due diligence to prevent action on them.

And then there is the fact that often- suicide involves illegal behaviors or behaviors the law is compelled to prevent. Jumping from buildings or bridges may require trespassing- but even when it doesn’t- the danger it poses to the public- a person other than the jumper being injured for example- makes it something that will be stopped most likely if observed.

There are various risks to public health and safety that can be connected to various suicide methods as well as the presence of a body or lost fluids. There are plenty of “little laws” and practicalities that could technically make any particular suicide in part a crime- from use of weapons and violations of laws (discharging a firearm in a place or manner it isn’t allowed) to general “unsafe conduct” or disruption of peace laws and more.

So even where the act itself isn’t explicitly illegal- there are many things that effectively make suicide not strictly legal and allowed either. And of course- “suicide” is a very vague term. Even where “suicide is legal” there’s generally a big asterisk there. For instance “assisted suicide” is still often a crime places where “suicide” is not criminal or is legal. There are other forms of suicide and various legalities and other factors to each.
