The people who clap and call them heroes and say "we're in this together" are the same people that will blanch at the idea of a higher minimum wage and say their job can be done by anybody.
But the job can be done by anyone. Also, anyone with a basic understanding of economics understands that higher minimum wage causes inflation, and then the minimum wage will effectively be the same in a years time
But this isn't what we "essential workers" normally do. We don't normally have to wear masks and spend hours sanitizing and deal with 200x more people because everything else is closed and people are bored. We don't normally have to worry about getting sick and dying because a customer can't go to work with a fever so they decide to renovate their garden instead.
so it's one extra thing you have to do, sanitising "everything"m people are losing their jobs in the millions and you're gonna say "Yeah, but i want more money".
The point is is that these people are the ones who have to stay behind and serve us because their job is essential to the function of our society, and we, as a society, will still treat them like shit long after this over because it's considered low skill or low importance.
that doesn't mean that they deserve "hazard pay" out of it, so what, if i have to deal with an unruly customer at my work, "hazard pay", have to deal with an idiot at work "frustration pay" and if I twist my ankle and still have to work, "compassion pay". I love this idea, i get more money for doing the same shit.
Dealing with shitty customers is part of the job, potentially contracting a rapidly spreading fatal virus isn't. The decision was made that these people are the ones who have to stay behind to serve us. And why wouldn't you want more pay if it was offered? Honestly, why do you personally care if that happens? Like you said, you'd love the extra money.
not for stupid reasons like that, i have accepted after working hard and proving my productivity exceeded all my coworkers combined. what you should do then is when you go shopping, bring extra cash and hand that to the workers as their hazard pay.
Every time you step outside you risk death. Every time you wake up at night to piss you risk slipping and spilling your brain in the toilet after cracking your skull on the bowl.
If nobody is trying to kill you, and minor precautions can keep you conceivably safe, you don't deserve any extra props.
Of course there are everyday risks. This one is new (one might say novel) that we still have a tenuous grasp of. But, that being said, I do believe that trying to convince you of the seriousness of this is pissing in the wind, so that'll be the last I say on this.
I was convinced. I changed my view when presented with new information.
59,000 deaths plus numbers being inflated, 1,000,000 infections plus Odin alone knows how many never got tested or even showed symptoms.
Then I look outside and see politicians infringing on constitutional rights and tech/information giants pledging to wipe out any Intel contrary to the lying WHO, while small business are being strangled to death, supply networks are being disrupted, and the usual bad actors are playing the same stupid games.
Look, ideologically, I want everybody, even you, to earn more at their jobs. I truly hope you succeed, and I truly hope you do not want others to not succeed. I don't really have the energy or will to fight a stupid battle of wills against two people who fundamentally disagree with me.
not trying a "gotcha", trying to understand why you believe you need to be paid more money for doing the same thing. You're not working harder, just working.
It's not about hard work. If hard work equated to more money I would have made a shit ton when I was in AmeriCorps. It's about the fact that the average wage hasn't gone up in almost 30 years while the prices for essential items like housing, food, and health care have skyrocketed. The fact of the matter is effort will only get you so far, and bootstraps mentality is a fallacy.
Yeah but you didn’t earn it. That’s the point of this argument, right? That people who work normal stuff don’t deserve extra pay? Sounds like you’re living the normal stuff. Why are you better than grandma bagging groceries?
The part where you say people don’t get extra pay just for doing their job and nothing special.
And then say that you’ll take extra pay just for doing your job and nothing special.
I mentioned 'out-of-the-blue' bcz people shouldn't use this as leverage..
you're willing to pay extra for your essential needs to compensate the hazard pay?
