The jobs I've had in Canada provide no notice. I don't see why employers should. If you get fired that's your own fault.

It's usually your own fault but there are also things like just bad circumstances. I also got fired 4 months ago since the company I'm working at ceases to exist in this form. Here in Germany and the Netherlands you get at least a months notice if you have a full time job, 2 weeks for part timers and I find that nothing more than logical since you have to find yourself another job to provide for you and your family

Ok. So let’s ignore unemployment benefits and all the things you have to help you keep things on track while you find another job that a company has no analog in helping them fill your position when you quit on the spot. Let’s also ignore that it isn’t JUST about the company that you give notice- it’s about your coworkers. The other human beings like you that you work with?

You know... the ones who depending on your job might have to take over projects from you, get filled in to cover while a replacement is found, or might have to work extra shifts? Jane or John who was given this Tuesday off so doesn’t have a sitter and has plans out of town? Jim who finally was able to take is vacation and is scheduled to have next week off? But you quitting on the spot means they may suddenly lose that and be called in to cover? Mya will have to stay late today because you were reliving her? Who will miss her train and have to pay $40 she doesn’t have for an Uber? Miss her brothers play or seeing her Sister who’s in town tonight for a family dinner etc?

When the company fires you on the spot you and your family might get screwed- but when you quit on the spot you could be screwing someone else or likely multiple people and their families. So if the company is wrong for screwing you- what does that make YOU when you do it your coworkers who aren’t involved in whatever is going on between you and the company that has you leaving? The shitty job you’re quitting on the spot for a new one or because you have the ability to just leave- but not them. Or if it was so bad they’d be gone too... if they could. But after you leave they don’t have a life raft out and will be stuck.

Let’s ignore all of that and look at a simple reason: when you tell your company you are leaving there is almost nothing they can do. You likely already have another job lined up so even if they were so petty and wanted the legal risk of trying to sabotage you.. it’s likely too late. They can what? Put you on lousy duty your last two weeks? If they are smart they won’t- since you could just walk right out and you staying helps them and your coworkers so likely your last two weeks will be more or less like most of your time except you will likely be taken off big projects/tasks, not given new ones, asked to toe up loose ends and maybe train a stand in or replacement.

Ok. Now- your company tells YOU you’re being fired. In your mind you have nothing to lose. Theft is a HUGE concern with employees who are leaving. It is hard to figure out and hard to do anything about once you leave. Attitude- what are they going to do if you don’t work, do lousy work, talk back, are down right unpleasant... fire you? Violence, vandalism... many people get very upset when they are fired. If you’re in a position to steal secrets, customers, etc. then nothing is stopping you and all those things might help you or at least hurt them if you mess with them.

You might have access to data, machines, inventory etc. you can screw up and cause damage. You might deal with customers and be in a position that you could “hurt” them by being rude or abusive or bad mouthing them. Being negative and or disparaging business.

Tl:dr- even if you aren’t thinking about what quitting on the spot might do to your coworkers- the line of thinking “well you don’t give me notice when you fire me...” shows the type of narrow, petty, self centered and immature thinking that is exactly WHY they don’t tell you. The same person that says “I’m leaving today because you don’t give ME notice..” is the person who thinks “screw them. They stole my time I’ll steal from them...” “They mess up my life, they hurt me? I’ll do it to them...!” And so on. These people are why- because if they tell you, you’re likely to try and “get back” at them or become a liability your last few weeks.

@laughwendylaugh- I’m sure it is. Especially to you. I imagine your coworkers might feel the same about their families compared to you. I never said not to try and find a better job, get more pay etc. I said that if you’re leaving- you can do it in a way that gives you a future reference, keeps a door open if you ever are down on your luck and need a place to go to get work, and doesn’t hurt the people you work with who are people just like you with families who your selfishness might keep them away from or put strain on.

Quit your job if you want to. Do you boo boo. Get that money and chase better opportunities that work better for you. But while you’re doing you- you have the choice wether to be an asshole or not. How can you be mad at your company for being assholes when you’re an asshole too? Is that so hard to understand? You ant choose how others act but you do choose how you act. Look around. Are there too many assholes in the world? Do you not like dealing with assholes? Don’t be one. Now there is one less asshole in the world. You made a difference. Yay.

I absolutely agree the there are reasons to leave instantly. I imagine those are more of the exception than the rule.

I think it depends on who your supervisor/manager is and how they treat you. I've had a supervisor who bullied me but was super nice and friendly to everyone else. Our manager told me that he would back her up. For me, it was a very toxic place to work although it was great for everyone else.
