"In the spring of 1775, General Thomas Gage, the British governor of Massachusetts, received instructions from England to seize all stores of weapons and gunpowder accessible to the American insurgents. On April 18, he ordered British troops to march against the Patriot arsenal at Concord and capture Patriot leaders."
The events that directly led to the first battle of the war.
The spark. The entire onset of the tensions in the first place was the government attempting to exert more and more control over the colonies, but the spark was that one attempt to disarm the people. Up until that point there was still recourse, other paths that could've been taken, but the government made it's choice, and the Patriots met them with fire and blood.
"The government" is a simplistic way of thinking of it. Specifically, it was the royal government who, the colonists believed, didn't have the right tools to successfully govern them. The revolution created a government by overthrowing one. But yes, much of it was based on the British having too much say in the military and how it operated.
It was their military. The tensions were over taxation and representation, exasperated by overbearing and distant lords, made worse by military, police, and political missteps. Many minor, and some infamous. A veritable powder keg. Rather than snuffing the fuse by hearing and respecting the colonists, we were instead dismissed as uncivilized, uppity, and ungrateful, effectively blowing on the lit fuse instead. They had every opportunity to snuff out or cut the fuse, or even direct it against the French, Spanish, and Indians, but they instead farted on the open flame and acted surprised when the keg finally blew.
The revolution was sparked by taxation without representation. The military conflict was started at Lexington-Concord. Stamp act congrees Oct 7th 1765 vs. Apr 19 1775. Political revolution far exceeds most military revolutions.
You need a political revolution before you have a militant one. That's why we're calling this a revolution and not a coup. Political discourse is necessary if you want anyone to follow you in a revolutionary war.

"Doesn't mean shit until it gets militant"
And yet:
The revolutions of 1848 in Europe either outright deposed several monarchs or instituted constitutional monarchy in countries where absolutism once reigned.
Political to militant Ex. France
Political Ex. Denmark
-
The revolutions of 1989 which saw the dissolution of the USSR were peaceful (barring the slavs ethnic cleansing in the years following)
-
More modernly many of the Arab spring protests were non-violent with several entities being removed by protest rather than all out civil wars.
-
Political revolution is the stepping stone to militant uprising if militant uprising is necessary/justifiable. The common man needs a reason to leave his home to fight a fight for the good of the other comman man.

Just watched the Beto clip this quote is from. The man is nuts and is literally arguing that the people do not have the right to rise up against tyrannical government.
I hate Trump, but if the Democrats keep supporting crap like this, Trump's gonna win again, in a landslide.
This idea that the 2nd amendment is so you can shoot the police is of course utter bullshit, but surprisingly common.
But O'Rourke put that poorly -- it's completely American to stand up against the government, when it doesn't involve murdering people.
