Actually, Picasso was a brilliant artist before, too, apparently his style changed due to the impact the war had on him - everything became twisted representing his disbelief in the cruelty and twistedness thereof.

That's part of it, he also changed his style because he got sick of the hyper-realism and his work didn't stand out. It just wasn't a good fit for him.
