I always try to go to the cashier. I don't usually have a couple of items and I think of it as a little bit of job security. Plus if something doesn't scan I can ask if it is free, I've heard that they like that (just kidding).
I hate people who give the cashiers a hard time. It's a business that has constantly changing priceing do to market prices. The item is not on sale/wrong price/ expired coupon, take it or leave it. I hate being behind someone that thanks the cashier has the ability to rule the company/store.
I DESPISE self check with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. I had to work them as an employee, and I hated them then, I hate them as a customer almost as much.
They are evil. In all seriousness, they are very glitchy, and because there are so many various versions and makers they are a pain to familiarize with ect.
When I was pregnant I was put on extreme light duty, basically one step up from bedrest. The first thing my store tried was sticking me on selfcheck "since you are just there for monitoring and don't actually have to move around or lift" HA!! People were constantly either trying to steal stuff (I don't play that), or they wanted to check out 10 5 gallons of paint and figured since I was sitting down I OBVIOUSLY needed something to do. The combination of pregnancy hormones, constant migraines, irritating electronics, and WAY too many customers with that good ol boy mentality did not go over well.
I have gone through self checkout hundreds of times, every time the feature is available where I'm shopping. A few times someone has to come turn a key but the same thing happens at a regular register when they have to wait for a manager override. I check myself out faster than most of the employees are capable of, and don't wait in twenty minute long lines at Wal-Mart. Plus I don't have to make awkward small talk with anyone.
