When you work in your university's research department

It's fine, say it anyway. I'd like to know your opinion :)
(Hope this doesn't sound creepy, I'm just genuinely interested)

looking for data that supports your claims instead of basing your claims on data is more likely to lead to bad science or research. But I have personally looked for data that supports my argument.

You have a point, though. I think a more generalised search is a better option when it comes to research. Gives you the chance to see the holes in your argument before it's too late.
Also, that doesn't make you a hypocrite. You're just giving an observation.
