looking for data that supports your claims instead of basing your claims on data is more likely to lead to bad science or research. But I have personally looked for data that supports my argument.
You have a point, though. I think a more generalised search is a better option when it comes to research. Gives you the chance to see the holes in your argument before it's too late.
