My mom worked in a pet store that had dogs and cats of all ages. The store didn't like to take in Prue breeds unless they are being given up. All the dogd and cats were from the streets or animals given up. They only charged enough for how much they took care of the animal.
But when people came in asking to see Prue breeds puppies or kittens the owner told all the employees to say they are fresh out. Even if they had them.
It really was a great pet store. It took in birds as well lol there was one grey parrot that was so so bad lmao. O and they had a pet octopus that was named Houdini. Because it would escape all the time and try to eat the other fish. It almost died the day it got in the lemur cage lol they flung him around like a toy. He was lucky an employee saw him before he lost a limb or died.
He wasn't even supposed to be there he was accidentally shipped to them with some fish which he ate on his trip lol.
@creativedragonbaby they can fit in any place slightly larger (i accidentally typed slarger which I now want to be a word... ) than the widest diameter of their beak. They are indeed wild.
"I don't like mixed breeds for aesthetic reasons" = I am fully aware that there are cats in the shelter who need a home more than this one (for health reasons or because they've just been in a shelter for so long) but I'm a selfish bitch who's happy to let them suffer as long as I get my particular kind of animal.
That's what the fuck this is.

"Some animals deserve a home more than others," is basically what you're saying.
Imagine being called a selfish bitch for adopting a child who needed a home just because you chose the kid who had only been there a year instead of the kid who has been there for five.
Not deserve, need. I specifically wrote "need" and even specified the reasons, and I naively thought nobody would trip over that. Oh well...
The problem is that the lady thinks of the cat as a fashion accessory, that's why she asked for a specific breed and rejected mixed breeds. If you think of animals or even humans (expanding on your example, if someone came to an adoption center and asked for an albino kid and then flat out refused to even look at the other kids if the place didn't have an albino child, wouldn't you call them a selfish bitch?) as fashion accessories, you probably aren't capable of taking care of one.
That's a horseshit assumption, just because someone wants a particular looking kind of pet doesn't mean they can't take care of one.
That is legitimately one of the most retarded things I've seen you say.
Sigh... I'm just gonna ignore the insults and pretend this is actual discourse for a while.
Look, she clearly isn't an experienced owner. Experienced owners know not to take animals purely for "aesthetic reasons", they know that taking care of an animal is something you should take seriously, and having a cat as a fashion accessory is clearly not it. At the same time, shelter animals are often (not always of course, but often) harder to take care of than if you raise a kitten. Many of them have previously been abused and ran away or they were just kicked out of the house when their owners grew bored of them, and they often have a hard time trusting humans. Giving away a potentially harder to raise animal to an inexperienced owner who, on top of it all, doesn't seem to take the whole thing very seriously, is at best inadvisable and I think the shelter did the right thing. (1/2)
We don't know what the cat in question is like. Maybe he's been abused and as a result is aggressive towards humans he doesn't know. Actually, and this is just an assumption, but if he was easy to take care of, I think the shelter would've been more forthcoming. If you come to a shelter and ask them for a cat that's easy to take care of because you've never owned one before but still want to do a good thing, I won't blame you. In fact that's the responsible thing to do. If you've never owned a cat and all of a sudden you feel charitable and blindly get one that has major health issues or is very wary of people, chances are you won't know what to do and will be returning the cat back in a few weeks. So if you want a cat, don't be ashamed to ask your shelter for a cat that suits inexperienced owners. But if you just come to a shelter wanting a particular cat without knowing or even really caring what its personality and history is like, be prepared to get turned down. (2/2)
"Experienced owners know not to take animals purely for "aesthetic reasons""
She didn't say she wanted it for aesthetic reasons alone and it's retarded to assume that's what she meant.
"this is just an assumption"
Yeah, like I said, horseshit. Your pulling it out of your ass.
And it wasn't an insult, it was a fact.
"she didn't say she wanted it out of aesthetic reasons alone" as I said already, she didn't ask about the animal's history or personality or, really anything other than its aesthetic. The fact that she didn't _say_ it doesn't mean we can't deduce from context. It's more about what she didn't say in this case.
Why are you so hostile towards assumptions? I even prefaced it saying it's an assumption and that I personally think that's the case. I didn't (ehm, unlike you might I add, "it's not an insult it's a fact" - now that's horseshit) try to pass it off as a fact. It's fine to argue whether you think that assumption is correct, maybe based on your experience with animal shelters vs my own, or some facts about shelters. It's okay to make an argument with personal experience as long as you say it's just your experience and not a fact. But it's not fine to just dismiss an entire argument because it contains an assumption that's derived from context and experience with this sort of thing.
"she didn't ask about the animal's history or personality or, really anything other than its aesthetic."
What? She didn't ask about any specific individual animal. There was no reason for her to ask those questions at that point in the conversation. You are not helping your case here.
"Why are you so hostile towards assumptions?"
I'm hostile towards assumptions that are without basis, because that's just veiled bullshittery. I doubt the even actually have hat breed of cat anyway.
Also, the fact was that it's legitimately one of the most retarded things I've seen you say.

I've been gone for a bit but ill only respond to the part aimed at me.
And no I don't really think it would be that weird if, say, a black family preferred to adopt a black child. Everybody has a preference and you assuming this lady in question only wants a pet for fashion purposes just because she used the word "aesthetic" is retarded.
Could that be the case? Absolutely, but we don't have enough information to determine that. The person at the shelter didn't even allow the woman to come to the shelter so they could get a sense of her, they read one text message and made that decision. Poorly.
I mean shit, we DO know this woman is opting to look at shelters instead of looking to just buy one. "Adopt don't shop," right?
Sigh... I don't want to sound like an old fart yelling at kids about not having experience, especially since I'm probably the youngest person in this thread. But this is something you have to have lived to understand. You say it's without basis because you don't have the experience with people like this who pick a cat just because it's cute but then realize they can't take care of it despite all the warnings, you don't know what it's like to have a shelter almost overflow because of idiotic parents who buy their kids an animal for Christmas and then realize they can't take care of them, etcetera. I am simply fed up with people being irresponsible towards pets and by now I can smell them from miles away.

No, I say it's without basis because it's without basis. In my experience people that prefer certain types of dogs can be just as responsible as people who dont give a shit what kind of dog they have. Just like your personal experience tells you that any minor warning sign should be taken as 100% proof of irresponsibility. Personal experience doesnt change what little information we have.
I really don't think its that hard to tell if someone is fit to own a pet or not within ten minutes of them interacting with an animal. This person did not interact with an animal or even interact directly with a human being. They sent a text
yes, working dogs, but for a family pet a mutt will be just as happy and friendly and maybe even more than a purebred as long as they are cared for and raised with love
Then they wouldn't say for aesthetic reasons. Saying that is like saying that you want to adopt it cause fashion. If you're worried about shedding then provide the place with necessary info about what yiu are looking for. Plenty of shelters would be happy to show you the animals that fit that criteria. Like if you want a dog that is easy to train they might have one thats already trained. Or one thats small cause you live in an apartment. These are all valid reasons. Fashion is not.
I’ve got a British shorthair (I don’t think he’s purebred, also he was the runt of the litter and given to us for free) and he is an absolute unit. Not fat or anything, just pure muscle. He is heavier than all of my other cats. Also, I’m British but not purebred either.
I get the idea behind this, but I mean let someobe adopt what they want. Not everyone is adopting a pet simply to save animals, they may GENUINELY havea specific breed they want, and if theu want it purebred who are you to judge? Personally, I would choose whatever looked most in need, but I dont disparage people for choosing based on pther criteria
