To be clear- NASA used metric and standard units whe landing on the moon. American space exploration was an offshoot of aviation, altitudes are measured and given in feet, wind in knots, and so on. American engineering is starting to widely embrace metric, but traditionally used standard. So things like flight information and mechanical specs were given in standard, and experimental data and science info like geology was recorded in metric. With the probe crash, NASA was experimenting with a switch to metric. Lockheed was used to producing aircraft in general as well as orders specifically for NASA in standard units. The failure to convert from the standard units used by the manufacturer to metric units caused a crash. So it wasn’t standard measurement that caused the accident anymore than we could blame metric, it was mixing the two and failing to communicate and account for it.
