Never got the point of these. " To stand proud and speak your mind", "to accept differences" okay but you realized this means you need to accept that some people are racists, or sexist, or whatever. They, according to this wall, should feel safe to stand proud and speak their minds and if you don't accept them then you're just creating a division and making them unwelcome. No these kinds of sayings only really apply to those who already think the same, or are one of the few "oppressed" type of people that feel everyone else needs to accept them wholesale or they're (everyone else) the bad guys. I'm not saying that there aren't bad things in our society but please stop with this whole nonsense. Nonsense that says people are all individuals that need to be respected and loved, as long you accept and agree that my opinions are "better" because no one is "hurt" except those with "bad" opinions already. Those type of people aren't actually welcome unless they change their opinions.

Instead we should encourage tolerance. You don't have to like someone or their opinions to tolerate them. You don't have to accept their ideas, or viewpoints. You just have to realize that they exist and do your best to avoid them when possible and tolerate them when not. This is part of growing as a society. To move from violence and aggression to having civilized conversation. And if that fails? Understanding that they aren't like you and you should move on to better pastures.

I dunno, mate. I’ll avoid your racist, sexist, homophobic or misogynistic views but do my best to tolerate them when confronted with them? I get your intent but ‘tolerance’ in this context sounds kinda like a great way to let aggressors push their limits, maybe even past a tipping point, while you turn a blind eye. I see your point but personally prefer the lines about rejecting division and speaking your mind on the wall.

As long as they stay opinions, tolerance, I believe, is more appropriate. The moment it crosses the line into active aggression or activism which seeks to impose by force or by unjust law their opinions onto others it's no longer just an opinion. At that point continued tolerance becomes detrimental just like you said. But here's the thing it swings both ways. We have to watch as a society and as citizens of nations that the opinions of either side don't cross that line. This whole absolute acceptance movement we've got going on is just as likely to push their limits, and it has, as the others. Bigotry is a logical fallacy but that's exactly why it exists and it's not limited to just those things we deem negative. Someone with an irrational hatred towards spiders is bigoted. Someone who hates gays is bigoted. Someone who assumes your homophobic because you didn't agree with them is bigoted. We will never all agree or all get along so our only realistic choice is watchful tolerance.
