As a forestry major who is moving into aboriculture, I'd really like to know how they ensure these plants get enough nutrients, sunlight, water, and how general maintenance works. I'm honestly curious, because that seems like a really shallow root system for those trees...
I agree it's shallow, but they all look like plants that would have shallow roots anyway; tropical plants you'd find on a deserted island where the "soil" is just sand. From there you could just use a hydroponic flushing system that is attached to the plumbing that is already on each floor. The sunlight is the biggest issue... perhaps supplemental under-head lighting we can't see from this angle? That'd seem like it would make anyone trying to sleep next to that area pissed though, but it could also double as lobby lighting.... so.. smart floorplan if done right.
If you wanna get ahead of the curb, look up vertical farming... that's the way of the future. The way of the future. The way of the future. The way of the future.... sorry... my Howard Hughes came out.

Unfortunately I live in a small, conservative city, and the tallest buildings are the local college. Our urban forester sucks, and the most popular ornamental trees are those not suited to our soils, or are extremely susceptible to fireblight.
I'm not particularly familiar with tropical plants, as the local forests here are coniferous, with some mountain maple, scrub oak, and aspen thrown in.
You don't have to smoke the pot, just learn indoor grows. You're not gonna find a bunch of people building tutoring sessions on how to grow hydroponic tomatoes.

Not really a supporter of weed... And the only form of it I support is when the THC has been removed.
Redwoods are gorgeous though. So are Ponderosa.
If you want to protect forests, sooner or later you are going to learn about cannabis. You're going to have to stop illegal grows. The best way to do that? Learn how it's grown, team up with Humboldt/Mendicino/Trinity county sheriffs and help them raid illegal grows.
I love cannabis. It's my favorite planet on Earth by far. Even if you don't want to smoke it, you can grow it for the seeds which have a perfect nutritional ratio, can be used for plastics, paper, clothing, soap, candles... damn near whatever. BUT. I also love Redwoods... and even though Cali legalized it so the illegal grows die down in a couple years, (they will.. it was about water tanks mainly) that just means the illegal grows will move. They will move to forested areas due to cover. They will move to where it is illegal. They will move East, most likely into Yellowstone... and they will spread from there.
I'm just trying to help you be prepared.
