But how were they able to create a genetically diverse population with only 18 ferrets?

They probably weren't, so the species will remain vulnerable for a very long time, similar to cheetahs

So ferrets aren't actually naturally occurring species. They are in the weasel family related closely to skunks but they were bred to be less stinky and slightly smaller.
