Tank Girl, Johnny Mnemonic, Freejack, Demolition man, 12 Monkeys, Ghost in the Shell, The Hand Maidens Tale, Judge Dredd, The Matrix.... 80's/70's Blade Runner, Total Recall, Robocop, Cherry 2000, Mad Max, A Boy and His Dog... going back to the 1920's we had Metropolis, and stories pre dating film have told of dystopian or barren futures. That movie list is very short and there are way more examples. We tend to picture Star Trek or popularized idealist sci fi when we think of the past but such isn't the norm. The top picture is closer to a 1950's esque era utopia like in advertising or some fiction. Many futurists explore current social issues or technologies impact on society through a familiar yet alien setting, while others make aspirational stories exploring a world without our social issues where tech is used for good. This isn't native to any time period. We create the REAL future by what we do, the more believable future depends on your actions today.
The one that concerns me when it comes to reoccurring themes in literature and media, 100-200 years from now is a Martian Civil War of Independence to overthrow the oppressive Earth regime.
Certain themes reverberate through history and can be seen mirrored in human works over ages. I wouldn't be surprised to see the future have to fight for freedom against tyranny. We tend not to shed our less proud traits than to disguise them where people can't see or don't care to look.
You spelled "scientists" wrong.
