I can see how sensitive topics such as terrorism and genocide could be offensive. I try to refrain, but I wasn't alive during 9/11 and I have trouble NOT making a good joke when the opportunity arises.
I don't mind a good dark joke, but sometimes 9/11 jokes can be tricky. There are many people alive today who did see it or lost family and friends that day. I'd say the wound is still pretty fresh as it directly effected people that are still alive. I always try to make sure I don't tell those jokes around people who may have been effected, that's a dick move.
I think anything can be classified as dark humour, but everyone just has different limits and boundaries based on what they are sensitive about and personal opinions or past experiences, and those limits should be respected. For example, making a dark joke about WWII to a Prisoner of War would be a bit of a dick move.
I remember after my grandma's viewing (my first) my mom asked me "So, is she dead?" And i laughed. It was great since the rest of my family was a wreck, but my mom and I recognized that it was just the way it was. Never felt closer to her. (My grandma wouldn't have approved, and that just made it better.)
I guess i just wanted to share. This post made me think of another meme called: "schrodinger's douchebag" which stated that a person only decided if a statement was a joke or not depending on the reaction of th people around them.
You're an insensitive prick if your "joke" makes someone try desperately not to cry. I know so many people who are the only survivors of the holocaust. All I can picture are my grand parents brothers and sisters in your ashtray and the fear and anger right now are almost unbearable.
Well sorry dark humor is like food, not everyone gets it.

Except that last thing is exactly what dark humor is. It honestly kinda makes me gag that this guy says Deadpool is dark humor. Deadpool is angry little boy humor, which is totally fine but it isn't dark humor. And Mark Hamil's Joker is dark humor? Gee, didn't he make jokes while he, you know, murdered people?
The reason people laugh at dark humor is to cope with the sad nature of the truth and reality. We laugh to emotionally defend ourselves from bad thoughts.
