In fact, it's octopodes. Octopuses is also acceptable but octopi is just wrong, because the word comes from Greek, not Latin.

All three are correct, according to merriam-webster. Octopus is a word in the english language, therefore the english rules can apply, so octopuses is correct. Octopi and octopodes are also fine, but there is no reason to say that it cannot be octopuses
Indeed, but octopi is only "correct" aka acceptable because so many people say it, not knowing it's actually wrong. At least according to oxforddictionaries.com.
Besides, and this is only a slight remark, in my personal experience, people who use octopi do it to sound smart. Which is ironic considering octopi, albeit acceptable, is technically the least correct one out of the three.
