^ yep. You dont need garbage in your life. (Unless the friend is in a horrible place right now, then you should help them but they still need to know it's steeling)
If Fiek is from the USA, then it's horrible because they use it to supplement their income (something they shouldn't have to do but that's for another post) but if he's somewhere else in the world some place find tipping offense like Japan and is illegal in Argentina.
They are guaranteed Federal/State (if higher) minimum wage if the reduced hourly rate plus the tips don't add up to that amount. Some servers earn great money, some do not. If they want to be guaranteed more than the Federal/State minimum wage then they should improve themselves through work and education and get a different job.
publicly shame them by slapping them with the hands of fire and saying "why did you steal the tip money PUT IT BACK" and then leave them in the restaurant to deal with the stares
If it was my buddy I'd lecture them, unless it was a long time friend. Then I'd smack them.

man, i would so yell at them. i believe everyone should work as waitstaff or some kind of tip based job. everyone should work retail also. those are two jobs that gets people to respect others in those fields.
Jerk move on the thief/friend's part, but to your comment servers are guaranteed minimum wage, whether or not that is a living wage is it's own debate, but while they are officially paid ~ $2-4/hr ($6.80 on federal contracts) + tips, if that money does not bring them up to minimum wage rates for the entirety of their shift (Federal $7.25/hr, some States vary to larger amounts) the employer must pay the difference to them. Some people, bartenders, pricier restaurants, popular restaurants in the best shifts walk away daily with very good money. If you look at the cash tips that many do not report, so it's tax free earnings, it's even better money.
guest, you are entirely correct. i used to own a restaurant and i have at times payed them full min wage because they didn't meet the minimum on tips. though honestly lots of servers hold back their tips so they don't have to declare them on taxes. the same goes for pizza delivery drivers. while on the road they are payed server wage. tip your delivery drivers. it is their car, their gas and if their car breaks down, they are the ones to fix it. they also pay more on car insurance because they are on the road all the time.
Did not know about this. Where I work its 11$ an hour (8.41$ American) and that's just minimum wage in my province in Canada. I've never heard about having to claim tips on taxes! Thanks for the info it's good to learn this stuff! Were I am, you get the minimum and the tips are there - they don't take any of that into account here.

our government taxes everything. they even tax your inheritance. if you inherit $1,000 the government is going to want their piece.
sm19, No, Canadian Personal Income Taxes are like the US Personal Income Taxes on Tips and Gratuities.
"Line 104 - Employment income not reported on a T4 slip. Income such as tips, gratuities, or occasional earnings may or may not be shown on your T4 slips. If they are not included on your T4 slips, report them on this line. It is your responsibility to keep track of the earnings you receive through your employment."
I would assume that just like in the US many/most do not report cash tips (or do not report the real amount) and hope not to get caught, but they are required to pay taxes on them.
How about, be an adult, and not a douche-bag, and tell the idiot to put it back, loudly, and make sure he's/she's thoroughly embarrassed, and don't use something so silly a term as "unfriend", just tell him/her that you're no longer going to be friends. Because there's no way you're going to hangout with such a lowlife.
Perhaps?
Make sense?
Hail Odin.
