In the UK the peace sign facing out is the same as the middle finger in the US

You'd expect them to take their hands off the handle bar just to say thank you to you? Potentially decreasing their control of the bike..Even though they could've made it past you whether you move or not.. Regardless, a nod of the head is enough. don't expect every biker to do this if you move a foot away for them.

NAHHH i don't expect it from them anymore. I moved for a guy in traffic once and he gave a slight wave like that and then his bike lost its balance and he tumbled over. So i figure if they have to do that a hundred times a day in traffic the odds of them falling increase greatly
