As well as "anything to shut the kids up". These meds were often given to kids pretty indescriminantly.

I'd bet real cash money, however, that someday in the far future, when medical science becomes more advanced, they will look at our current medical practices, and medicines, and wonder why we used half the stuff we did, and find it equally as amusing as we do now toward ancient medicines.

That's not too bad, the only truly disturbing ingredient is the chloroform. Why would they put chloroform in something meant to be ingested?

It's more the combination. Alcohol, cannabis and morphine, with the chloroform.
