Honestly he should have straight up told her that he was interested in the phone. Less complicated and gets straight to the point.

Well if she knew she put up the phone for sale, and then received a text from a number she didn't have in her phone, she should have been able to connect the dots

Agree with holybaconbutter, when ever you're contacting someone from an online post. Be sure you state the reason why you are contacting them in the first text.
