I'm not sure if it was laziness or just having no reason to do it. The Greek Gods were believed to be able to disguise themselves or shape shift into humans, I'm not sure if animals are included or not. You could at any time mingle with a God so they really didn't have a reason to check. Also, it wasn't until the 19th century that people became more fascinated with climbing mountains.

It does say in Greek myth that Zues came and sexed a woman as a goose, and there is even more lore that states the same fact. The greecian gods could, in myth, turn into animals.
