what if they aren't? why would you call somebody British African American if there was no American in them?

That's the whole point, the term African American is too specific to be useful in the way it is commonly used.

My black friend corrected me on this so I've started using the term Black instead. A few weeks ago, a lady became highly offended and corrected me to say African American. I lose.
