How do you possibly do that with a MUSICAL movie? But in contrast a proper novelization of a good movie is great, I read them all the time.

I think Tobey portrayed more of a 1950's Spider-Man with his upright morals and demeanor. Andrew Garfield is more modern in that his nerdiness came from his lack of social skills and vocalization (in a lot of his interactions with other people you could see him visually struggling to make sentences and interact, which i thought was great acting on his part). Personally I prefer Garfield's portrayal because I relate to him better, but Tobey was great too for his time.

It would have been funny if he said "Hi Serious, He's dead"
