Last semester I had an English prof who cursed a total of over 1000 times during all the lectures I had with him. Plus the course I had him for was Comics As Literature.
College is fucking great.

Good/evil are pretty self-evident, lawful is the tendency to adhere to rules or personal moral codes while chaotic places value on personal freedom rather than obedience.

Considering that gay representation is only just starting to trickle into children's media, any gay character who isn't a retrogressive stereotype is automatically an accomplishment

Actually, witnesses report that the sixteen year-olds weren't trying to break in at all, they were just talking with the eleven year-old outside. So yes, their guilt is doubtful, and no, he did not deserve to die even if he was guilty.

Two witnesses saw the boys talking with each other outside before the shooting, with one reporting that the 11yo was trying to buy a phone from them. There are no signs of forced entry on the door and it was the middle of the day. This likely wasn't some heroic act of self defense; it was a child killing a slightly older child with almost no provocation, which is exactly why gun control is necessary.

My psychology teacher said they can't think at all? 27 comments
guest · 9 years ago
There are cases of people who didn't acquire language until late enough in life that they can remember what it was like before (e.g. deaf people who didn't initially have access to specialized education, kidnapping victims who were never socialized). Many of these people say they had rudimentary thought processes based on concepts, but that learning words or signs allowed them to articulate much more complex ideas in their minds. A person who never learns a language would likely think similarly.

There's likely never going to be a panacean cure for cancer, each case is too different. The best we can do is advance the different treatments through research so that there are more options for doctors to choose from.

The organs are used for research purposes, and they are only taken if the mother decides to donate the fetal tissue. Furthermore, the organs are not sold for "about $75 US per organ", but donated to labs free of charge, though the abortion provider may increase the fee due to the increased effort required for donation.
There is not, as you seem to be implying, some sort of fetal organ black market. The obtained tissue is used for research in the hopes of advancing science and medicine, and not for personal gain, and the donation of fetal tissue is legal in the U.S.
Amazing chimera cat 13 comments
guest · 9 years ago
It's not dyed. As the title says, the cat is a chimera, which is a genetic anomaly where an organism (animal, plant, or human) possesses two different sets of DNA. One of this cat's DNA sets codes for black fur, the other for orange.

Fun fact: in Orwell's 1984, the government keeps its citizens under the impression that they are constantly at war in order to a) promote the fervent, cult-like worship of the Party and Big Brother, and b) keep everyone working and productive without expecting the outputs of their labour to actually increase the overall quality of life.
Living in America 27 comments

Certain circles on tumblr tend draw a distinction between racism and prejudice. They define prejudice as any form of discriminatory behaviour, and racism is a subtype of prejudice which is systematic and institutional.
By those definitions, a white American can experience racial prejudice, but not true racism, because there are no institutions and systems in place which specifically work against white people.

Yeah, stuff like this is just an extension of body horror. We have a primal fear not of the creature specifically described, but of humanoid things that clearly aren't healthy humans. This face evokes sickness, mutilation, and the frightening distortion of the familiar, not some ancient superpredator from our collective unconscious.
It's the same reason so many people are freaked out by clowns; the parts of our brains that deal with processing human faces are very sensitive to abnormalities like the ones clown makeup creates, so they don't sit well with us.

How I felt coming out in 2015 15 comments
guest · 9 years ago
Should we really just forgive opinions that are inherently hateful and prejudiced, though? Like, if I went around saying I don't think black people should be allowed go to school with white people, I would be accused of being racist, and rightly so. Why should we treat gay marriage any differently?

Dear everyone (mostly my parents), 29 comments

Yes, because getting a tattoo will inflict profound psychological trauma on children and gay marriage will kill people.
This post is about choices which don't affect anyone except the person making them (with the possible exception of abortion, depending on your views). The message is to stop opposing things "just because you don't like them"; in other words, it's saying that personal preference alone is not a good reason to judge or forbid something. By no stretch of the imagination is it claiming that murder is okay.

Daniel Radcliffe summing it up 9 comments

I find it kind of selfish to end a friendship because the other person doesn't return your feelings? It's happened to me more than once that I've fallen in love with a friend who didn't reciprocate, but we always kept the friendship going. It's not like either of us could control what we felt or didn't feel for the other, so it wouldn't be fair for me to cut her off just because we wanted different things. Yeah, it hurts like hell at first, but eventually you move on.
