I showed this to a friend of mine who is a therapist. She laughed and told me there are people in town she can't talk to - not patients of hers, just people that have done things to patients of hers. Small town problems.

It's an actual medical practice called Electro Convulsive Therapy. No one knows how it actually works, just that it does. One of the theories of how it works is that people with depression feel guilty and this treatment caters to their craving to be punished. I am not making this up.

Teach kids to feel good about themselves as a result of doing the right thing, then every time they do the right thing they reward themselves with feeling good - that's the proper use of self-esteem. There's nothing wrong with a good healthy dose of guilt for doing the wrong thing.
