Everyone cares what other people think- at least to some degree. But the main point is that these are TEENAGE girls. Your adolescent and teenage years are crucial for social development. If you're constantly picked on and told that the things you like are bad or wrong, what kind of effect do you think that's going to have on an already emotional, impressionable teenage girl?

That's not even what this is saying. There are tons of men who criticize girls for liking Starbucks or video games or anything, really. It doesn't matter what a girl's interest is, she's still criticized for it. It's not talking about competition among women or judgment amongst women.
